AWESOME!

Journal Entry: Tue Jun 2, 2009, 3:31 PM

Wanted to get that other journal off my front page… so…

Awesome day. I was cleaning out some of the back storeroom and ran across a bunch of bottles of white glue and a box full of Borax. The Borax (a kind of laundry soap) is used to keep away insects and pests (not the human variety, sadly)… but it also does fun things when mixed with white glue.

First and foremost, it turns the glue rubbery and bouncy. And when you roll them into small balls and add in a bit of glitter, you get a plethora of very interesting-looking bouncy balls. I filled a coffee can with them and stuck them under my desk to use as ammo later.

Then, since I was bored, I used some string, a few old pens, a lot of masking tape, and the remains of my rubber-band ball to fashion myself a doesn’t-work-very-well sling shot. :XD: And of COURSE I had to practice.

I aimed at the poster that causes me horrifying nightmares, trying hard to hit the anti-grammar-target. “All of us IS going.” *sheesh* I can’t believe I work at a print company that’s had that hanging on the wall for nine months.

…I didn’t do so well with the shooting, although I blame the make-shift sling shot more than I blame me. I need to do a bit more work on my weapon of mass chaos. :devilish: And do a slightly better job hiding the evidence, as well. The woman who works the front desk was sending me evil looks. :)

Of course, that could also be due to the cornstarch/water mixture I gave her. Have you ever mixed cornstarch and water? It is hard when you push on it, but it drips when you try to pick it up. It’s freaking cool. :XD: I put it on her desk and she made a mess trying to get it up. That could have been the problem too. I put green coloring in it to make it slimy.

Horrible Harry’s green slime. Harold and his silly crayon have nothing on me. (inside joke) If only I could have gotten super-indelible-never-come-off-until-you’re-dead-or-maybe-even-later coloring…

*lmao* She wanted to know if I needed a babysitter today. ^^;

Had an eye appointment that I just got back from. Doctor said I’m as blind as a bat. Blinder, actually, since bats really see almost as well as humans. Good thing my ears are so good and I can hear people coming. I now wear -9 power contacts. :disbelief: This puts me at about 20/1600 – I can see at 20 feet what the normal person could see at 1600 feet.

I went to Target and got some scented bubble liquid. :evillaugh: Tomorrow’s going to be fun as well.

I’m going to go make supper now that I’ve chased my rant off my front page. Later. ;)

Oooh, those are some awesome crafts/weapons you've created! :D Haha, I love the cornstarch and water thing (done it myself) but I never thought of adding food coloring! :plotting:

You know what you should get are those bubbles that never pop. My sister once got a bottle of it and we are STILL finding those bubbles in the most random places!

Editing nano is like hitting a tree with a shovel. It doesn't accomplish much fast...but eventually the tree dies from bludgeoning.

And they just let you make toys out of chemicals, do they? :poke: Sounds like you had a fun day, anyway.

Aw, but I'm sorry about your eyes, though. That's scary, but I guess you sort of knew? I have no idea what my eyes are, but I can see clearly for just under a foot… :paranoid:

In other news, you've read Robert Munsch????? :glomp:  :excited: I think you're the first American I've met who has….

You can do that with cornstarch? Interesting... :hmm:

Wow your eyes are bad. Be careful with contacts. Almost lost an eye to them.

:iconcordria:
Yes, you can. :)

*lmao* I'm careful. I don't like sticking things in my eyes, but I don't like glasses even more. My peripheral vision is really good and having the blurriness around the edges gives me headaches.

:iconcordria:
...yes and no. The boss wasn't there yesterday. :XD:

Oh, I totally knew. I've had horrible eyes all my life and the fact that they keep getting worse is simply a part of my life.

I have a 'reading' (meaning I can make out the letters) distance of about four inches. :) Thus I can't read, since at that close I have to cross my eyes and that hurts.

Hell, yes, I've read Munsch. I've read a lot of his books. You can't beat Purple, Green, and Yellow and that girl's markers. I'm surprised you caught the reference. Nobody ever does.

The Latest Recommendation:

Graceling by Kristin Cashore.

In a world where people born with extreme skill – called a Grace – are feared and exploited, Katsa carries the burden of a skill even she despises: the Grace of killing. She lives under the command of her uncle Randa, King of the Middluns, and is expected to execute his dirty work, punishing and torturing anyone who displeases him.

When she firsts meets Prince Po, who is Graced with combat skills, Katsa has no hint of how her life is about to change.

She never expects to become Po’s friend.

She never expects to learn a new truth about her own Grace – or a terrible secret that lies hidden far away… a secret that could destroy all seven kingdoms with words alone.

Overall Rating: 3.5 / 5 stars

In the debut novel that is overflowing with an iffy plot and a confusing world, Kristin Cashore manages to make her characters shine. I almost put the book down after thirty pages, so oddly worded was her narration and so confusing was the concepts she was passing off. In the first section of the book, she fell headfirst into the horribly common plague of ‘action first, explain important details that allow the reader to understand the action later’.

Then she stopped focusing on plot for a moment and her characters made their move. Ten pages from being destined to be returned to the library as a failed experiment, suddenly I fell in love with Katsa and Po and (eventually) Blitterblue and even the wretched Giddeon. I was determined and destined to worm my way through the novel if for no other reason than to find out what ultimately happens to them. Giggling at their lifelike and boisterous conversations, my breath catching at angsty moments, loving their growth and change as characters…

All the while, rolling my eyes at the convoluted and seemingly random plot. The penultimate ending is abrupt, leaving us with the knowledge that there is more to the story… but most definitely not enough for a sequel without adding in some new twist. The essential ‘ plot’ to the story involving the Mad King certainly is wrapped up… but in a novel based almost completely on character, the character’s strings are left hopelessly up in the air. A mere twenty more pages detailing Katsa’s journey back to Middluns to face with her uncle would have summed up the novel perfectly.

Borrow (don’t buy) this book and slog through the first thirty pages. I promise you that once you get your teeth into the characters, their boundless spirits will echo off the pages, drag you into the story, and will hold a knife to your throat until you finish this. I hope Kristin Cashore can do better with her plot next time, for she has a real Grace when it comes to characterization and will create some truly memorable stories.
